Problem Note 60863: Macro statements might execute within a PL1 style comment

DetailsAboutRate It

If a macro invocation is followed by a PL1 style comment and the comment contains macro statements, the macro statements might execute.

For example, in the code below, the macro iShouldNotRun is incorrectly executed within the comment:

%macro outer(dummy);
  %put &sysmacroname is running;
  %inner()
%mend outer;

%macro inner(dummy);
   %put &sysmacroname is running;
%mend inner;

%macro iShouldNotRun(dummy);
   %put &sysmacroname is running;
%mend iShouldNotRun;

%outer()/*%iShouldNotRun()  but I do */

To circumvent this problem, do one of the following:

  • Insert a space after the beginning comment and before the macro statement contained within the comment. For example:
    %outer()/* %iShouldNotRun() and I do not */
  • Insert a space after the macro invocation and before the beginning of the PL1 style comment. For example:
    %outer() /*%iShouldNotRun() and I do not */
